The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-1) lost to the No. 6-ranked team in the country, Washington & Lee, 80-57.
Brianna Long led the team with 14 points, shooting 2-for-3 from the field, 10-for-12 from the free throw line, 18 rebounds, and had three steals.
Keira Bagwell recorded seven points, shooting 3-for-9 from the field, 1-for-3 from beyond the arc, and four rebounds.
Bre Robinson has seven points, shooting 3-for-9 from the field, 1-for-2 from three-point territory, and three rebounds.
The Generals started hot, going on an 11-2 run early in the first quarter, but the Marlins went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 13-8 at the 5:25 mark. Washington & Lee outscored the Marlins 5-4 over the next two minutes to bring the score to 18-12. The Generals finished the quarter with a 6-0 run to hold a 24-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
A low-scoring affair to start the second quarter, as the Marlins outscored the Generals 6-5 in the first four minutes of the second to bring the score to 29-18. However, WLU drained back-to-back threes to increase their lead to 35-18. VWU went on a 4-2 run to cut the lead to 37-22, but the Generals finished the first half strong to lead 43-22 heading into the break.
Coming out of the break, the Marlins scored the first two points, but the Generals rallied and went on a 12-2 run to lead 55-26 at the 5:47 mark. Over the next two and a half minutes, Virginia Wesleyan went on an 8-5 run with two three pointers from
Bre Robinson and
Keira Bagwell, to cut the lead to 60-34. The Generals responded with a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 66-34.
In the final frame, the Marlins came out swinging and went on an 8-2 run to bring the score to 68-42 at the 7:16 mark. Virginia Wesleyan continued its good offensive run of play, going on a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 69-47 with 5:04 left in the game. The two teams traded points the rest of the game, with the Generals outscoring the Marlins 11-10 to take home the 80-57 win.
