The Virginia Wesleyan University men's volleyball team (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) defeated conference opponent Lynchburg 3-0, winning 25-21, 25-15, and 25-15.
Jamarhe Wills led the team with 12.5 points, with 11 kills, three digs, one assist, one block assist, and one solo block,
Matthew Sheppard had 9.5 points, seven kills, one ace, three block assists, eight digs, and one assist, and
Christian Harris tallied 8.5 points, with seven kills, a .417 hitting percentage, one ace, three digs, and one block assist.
The first set was a close contest, as the Marlins built an early 5-3 in the set. However, the Hornets came back to tie the set at 5-5, but Virginia Wesleyan countered with a 3-0 run to lead 8-5. VWU held a three point lead until midway through the set, where they went on a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 18-11. The Marlins held a healthy lead until the Hornets had a late surge going on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 24-21, but a kill from
Matthew Sheppard seals the 25-21 win.
Virginia Wesleyan carried the momentum from the first set to jump out to a 4-1 lead to start set two and went on a 4-2 run to build an 8-3 lead over the host. The Marlins held a five point lead for most of the set until the Hornets went on a 3-1 run to cut the lead to 19-15. However, VWU rallied with a 6-0 run to win the second set 25-15.
In the third set, the match was close as the teams tied five times in the first 12 points deadlocked at 6-6. However, the Marlins offense got hot going on a 6-1 run to lead 12-7. Lynchburg came back going on a 3-1 lead to cut the lead to 15-12, but the Marlins countered and outscored the Hornets 10-3 the rest of the set to seal the 3-0 sweep of Lynchburg with at 25-15 win in the third set.
