Women's Basketball Narrowly Falls to Lynchburg 65-56

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (4-8, 0-6 ODAC) was defeated by Lynchburg 65-56. 

Bre Robinson led the offense with 18 points shooting 7-for-15 from the field and 4-for-7 from the free throw line; she grabbed six rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Maesyn Blaylock had 13 points shooting 4-for-8 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line; had seven rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Brianna Long recorded 10 points shooting 3-for-9 from the field and 4-for-5 from the charity stripe; seven rebounds, two steals, and one assist. 

Virginia Wesleyan's Jada Norman scored the first basket of the game, but the Hornets responded with a 5-0 run to lead 5-2 with 6:42 in the first quarter. The Marlins rallied and went on a 9-5 run to take an 11-10 lead at the 2:57 mark. However, Lynchburg ended the quarter with a 6-3 run to lead 16-14. 

The Marlins scored the first basket of the second quarter to tie the game at 16-16, and over the next five minutes outscored the Hornets 6-4 to lead 22-20 at the 3:43 mark of the third quarter. However, Lynchburg fought back and went on a 7-2 run over the next two minutes to lead 27-24. The Marlins scored two the rest of the quarter and went into the break down 27-26. 

VWU came out hot after halftime, going on a 4-0 run to lead 30-27, but LYN responded with a 4-0 run to lead 31-30. The two teams traded baskets to keep it a one-point game midway through the third quarter at 35-34 until the Hornets strung together a 6-2 run to lead 41-36 with 2:03 left in the quarter. The Marlins outscored Lynchburg 3-2 in the last two minutes and went into the final frame down 43-49. 

Again, the Marlins started well to start the quarter with a 5-0 run to lead 44-43, but the Hornets responded with a 7-2 run to regain the lead to 50-46. The teams traded points over the next four minutes to bring the score to 55-50 with 2:30 left in the fourth. The Hornets went on a 4-0 run to lead 57-50 with 1:56 left to force VWU to conserve time and foul, but Lynchburg went 8-for-8 in the final two minutes to seal the 65-56 win.
