Marlins Beat Averett For First Conference Win of the Season

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (5-8, 1-6 ODAC) defeated Averett 66-58 for their first conference win of the season. 

Keagan Schwab tallied 21 points shooting 8-for-20 from the field, 3-for-7 from beyond the arc, and 2-for-3 from the free throw line; she had three rebounds and one assist. Bre Robinson recorded 17 points shooting 6-for-10 from the floor, 1-for-2 from deep, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line; she had seven rebounds, one steal, and three assists, and teammate Brianna Long had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 4-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line, and registered three steals. 

The first quarter started slow for both teams, but the Marlins were able to build a 7-2 lead by the 4:07 mark with a big three from Bre Robinson. Averett marched back with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 7-7. The Marlins outscored the Cougars 4-3 the rest of the quarter to lead 11-10. 

Virginia Wesleyan caught fire in the second quarter, going on a 9-0 run to lead 20-10 fueled by two threes from Keagan Schwab. Down ten, the Cougars scored some points the next five minutes, but the Marlins outscored the visitors 23-12 to lead 34-22 heading into halftime. 

Averett got hot after the break and rallied with an 8-0 run to cut the Marlins lead to 34-30. Averett kept up the pressure and outscored VWU 6-4 to bring the score to 38-36. Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 6-0 run to open up the lead to 44-36. The Marlins finished out the quarter outscoring the Cougars 7-4 to take a 51-40 lead into the final frame. 

To start the fourth quarter, Virginia Wesleyan went on a 7-2 run to lead 58-42 with 7:03 left in the game. Averett kept fighting and chipped away at the Marlins' lead, outscoring the host 16-6 over the next five minutes to bring the score to 64-58. With less than a minute left, Keagan Schwab made a clutch jumper to put the Marlins eight points ahead with 24 seconds left to seal the win for the Marlins.
