The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (3-3, 1-0 ODAC) was defeated by Bridgewater 61-54.
Bre Robinson led the Marlins offense with 24 points, shooting 8-for-12 from the field, and 5-for-6 from the free throw line; she had nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
Keagan Schwab had 13 points shooting 5-for-14 from the field, and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc; she added two rebounds, and one block.
Jaiden Hunter tallied five points shooting 2-for-4 from the floor, and 1-for-2 from the charity stripe; she grabbed five rebounds, three steals, and one assist.
Bridgewater started strong going on an 8-2 run to begin the game, but the Marlins responded with a 5-2 run over the next 92 seconds to bring the score to 10-7. The Eagles outscored VWu 6-5 the rest of the quarter to lead 16-12 after the first ten minutes.
Virginia Wesleyan came out hot in the second quarter, going on a 6-0 run to take an 18-16 lead over the Eagles. The two teams traded points over the next three minutes as the Marlins kept a 23-22 lead. However, VWU outscored the Eagles 7-2 to lead 30-24 with 1:26 left in the first half. The Eagles went on a 4-2 run to end the quarter, but the Marlins held a 32-28 lead at the break.
After the break, VWU extended their lead to start the second half with a 5-2 run to lead 37-30. The Eagles' offense exploded going on a 14-0 run over the next seven minutes to take a 44-37 lead in the game. The Marlins broke their scoring drought with a layup from
Bre Robinson, but the Eagles went into the final frame with a 46-40 lead.
In the fourth quarter, it was a back-and-forth game with both teams making buckets. With 4:49 left in the game, the Eagles held a 57-49 lead over the Marlins. Bridgewater went on a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 61-49 with 2:21 left in the game. However, Virginia Wesleyan countered with a 5-0 run the rest of the game, but the lead was too great, and the Eagles won 61-54.
