Women's Basketball Drop Close Contest with St. Mary's (MD) 67-66

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (1-1) was defeated by St. Mary's College of Maryland 67-66. 

Keagan Schwab led the offense as she scored 22 points, shot 9-for-22 from the field, 4-for-10 from beyond the arc, had three rebounds, and two blocks, Jaiden Hunter scored 11 points shooting 5-for-7 from the field, had a team-high 16 rebounds, three steals, and one assist, and Bre Robinson had nine points shooting 4-for-12 from the field, grabbed three rebounds, three steals, and one assist. 

A hard-fought first quarter where the Marlins shot 8-for-19 from the field compared to the Seahawks 6-for-15 from the field and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. VWU scored the first bucket and led 4-2 three minutes into the quarter, the Seahawks responded with a 5-2 run to lead 7-6. The Marlins scored the next two baskets to lead 10-7. St. Mary's responded with a 4-0 run to lead 11-10. The two teams traded buckets retaking a one point lead until the Marlins went on a 4-2 run to end the quarter with a 16-15 lead. 

The Seahawks came out in the second quarter hot going on a 9-0 run to take a 25-16 lead in the first two minutes of the quarter. St. Mary's extended their lead to 31-18 with 6:35 left in the quarter, when the Marlins responded, outscoring the Seahawks 12-6 to bring the score to 37-30 at halftime. 

After the break, Virginia Wesleyan's Keagan Schwab hit a three to cut the lead to 37-33, but the Seahawks went on a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 44-35. The Marlins strung together another surge that brought the score to 44-40, but the Seahawks hit a three-pointer and a layup to bring the lead back to nine. With 3:26 left in the quarter, the Marlins hit a three to start their comeback as they outscored St. Mary's 9-2 to cut the lead to 53-51 at the end of the third quarter. 

With the momentum, Virginia Wesleyan went on a 7-2 run to begin the fourth to take a 58-55 lead over the host. The Seahawks hit a three on the next possession to tie the game at 58 all midway through the fourth quarter. The Seahawks went on a 7-2 run over the next two minutes to lead 65-60, the Marlins scored back-to-back points to cut the lead to 65-64 with 2:49 left in the quarter. St. Mary's made one last bucket and it was just enough to put the Seahawks out of reach of the Marlins and they won 67-66.
