The Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball team fell to Meredith College on Day 1 of the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament by a score of 66-59.
Bre Robinson led the Marlins' offense with 24 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field, 2-for-4 from the 3 point territory, and 6-for-8 from the free throw line; she had six rebounds, one assist, one block, and three steals.
Jaiden Hunter scored 18 points for the Marlins, shooting 8-for-13 from the field and 2-for-11 from the free throw line; she registered 13 rebounds, three assists, one block, and two steals.
Brianna Long tallied 10 points, shooting 3-for-6 from the field and 4-for-6 from the free throw line; she totaled 10 rebounds, 1 block, and three steals.
Virginia Wesleyan started the game with a three-pointer by
Bre Robinson, just eight seconds into the game. The Marlins led the game up until 6:57 on the clock as Meredith made two foul shots to tie the game 5-5. Meredith went on a 5-2 scoring run between 6:16 and 5:09 to lead by a score of 10-7. The Marlins responded as Robinson made a layup, was fouled, and made her free-throw to tie the game 10-10 with 4:15 on the clock. The Marlins gained a one point lead with 21 seconds on the clock, but Meredith finished the quarter with a lay-up to put them ahead 16-15.
The Marlins went on an 8-4 run between 8:51 and 5:08 in the second quarter to put them ahead 20-24. Meredith responded with a layup and jumper to tie the game with 3:19 on the clock. Robinson's layup at 1:16 gave the Marlins a one point edge that was extended to three going into halftime as
Gabrielle Athy made two free throws.
Virginia Wesleyan led until 7:21 in the 3rd quarter as Rylie Wade put in a layup for Meredith to give them a one point edge.
Keagan Schwab made a jumper with 5:58 on the clock to give the Marlins a 41-39 lead. From 4:03 to the end of the 3rd quarter, Meredith went on an 11-4 scoring run to put them ahead 52-45 going into the final quarter of the game.
Meredith continued their fast paced play at the start of the 4th quarter, leading 59-46 with 7:46 on the clock. The Marlins responded by closing the game to six points at the 4:57 mark. Schwab's 3-pointer with 9 seconds on the clock put the Marlins within 5 points, but it was too late. Meredith came out on top by a score of 66-59 to end the night.
Tomorrow, the Marlins will face Methodist University to conclude the TowneBank Tipoff Tournament.
