The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team (1-0) defeated Greensboro 59-46 in the 2024-25 Season Opener.
The Marlins offense was led by
Keagan Schwab with 14 points shooting 5-for-15 from the field, 2-for-6 from three-point territory, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line, and grabbed five rebounds,
Jaiden Hunter had ten points shooting 4-for-7 from the field, five rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and two assists, and
Bre Robinson recorded ten points shooting 3-for-8 from the field, 4-for-4 from the free throw line, four rebounds, two steals, and one assist.
Virginia Wesleyan started great, with a 6-0 run to begin the game. However, Greensboro responded with a 7-4 run to cut the lead to 10-7 with 3:47 left in the first quarter. Then, the Marlins responded with a 7-0 run to take a 17-7 lead over the host. VWU outscored the Pride 3-2 to take a 20-11 lead into the second quarter.
The Marlins again had a fast start to the second quarter as they went on a 7-0 run in the first five minutes of the quarter. The two teams traded points the rest of the quarter, but VWU held a 31-17 lead heading into halftime.
After the break, the Pride came out and outscored the Marlins 8-6 to cut the lead to 37-25. Virginia Wesleyan quickly responded with a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 43-27. In the final 81 seconds of the third quarter, VWU scored four unanswered points to lead 47-27 heading into the final frame.
VWU outscored the Pride 4-2 in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Both teams were scoreless until the 6:57 mark when Greensboro went on an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 53-37. After two scoreless minutes, the Pride outscored the Marlins 9-4 in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Marlins held off the Pride to seal the 59-46 win.
