The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team hosted Division II Virginia State University and conference rival Bridgewater in a doubleheader on Friday, March 31. The Marlins fell to Virginia State 2-5 and defeated Bridgewater 6-3. 

Game One:

The match against Virginia State played with a DII scoring format, where 1 point is awarded for doubles. Alexa Brewster and Christine Zalameda teamed up at #1 for the first time this season, defeating Ashleigh Charles and Ginger Johnson 6-2. No. 2 and No. 3 doubles were lost by the Marlins 0-6 and 2-6 to give Virginia State the doubles point. 

Alexa Brewster and Christine Zalameda kept their momentum going into singles play. At No. 1 Brewster defeated Ashleigh Charles with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Zalameda fought hard at the second singles spot, came back from a set down and saving a match point in the third set ten-point tiebreaker to defeat her opponent 2-6, 6-3, and 12-10. 

Game Two:

The Marlins opened with a strong showing in doubles against Bridgewater College to begin match play in the afternoon. Brewster and Zalameda dominated at No. 1 doubles with an 8-1 victory. Kristina Abrams and Maya Brown secured a key victory for the Marlins at No. 2, winning in a close tiebreaker 8-7 (7-5). 

Shannon Lewes finished first in singles over Malena Hoover at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Brewster won her fourth straight match against Emma Nesselrodt 6-1, 6-1 at the top spot. Clinching the match for the Marlins was Zalameda at No. 2 against Emily Daigneault with a score of 6-0, 6-3. 

Maya Brown was the player of the match against Bridgewater as she won her in a thrilling tiebreak at the sixth singles spot with a 6-4, 0-6, and 10-8 score, bringing the Marlins to a 6-3 victory. 

Next, the women will face the Generals of Washington and Lee at home.
