Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Marlins Claim Two Singles Victories in Loss to Salisbury

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team picked up a pair of singles victories but couldn't overcome a doubles deficit, falling 5-2 to Salisbury.

The Marlins showed early promise in doubles play, highlighted by a strong performance at the top of the lineup. The pairing of Tuva Flink and Jette Hafermann controlled the #1 doubles match from the outset, using consistent baseline play and sharp net presence to secure a convincing 6-2 victory.

However, Salisbury answered back in the other two doubles flights. Virginia Wesleyan's #2 team of Mikisha Thomas and Jette Dammeier battled throughout but dropped a competitive 6-4 decision. At #3, Lexi Hackbirth and Zoe Vliegen fought to stay within reach but ultimately fell 6-3, giving Salisbury the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.

In singles play, the Marlins found success in the middle of the lineup.

At #4 singles, Jette Hafermann delivered one of the most complete performances of the day. After dropping just five games combined across two sets, Hafermann dictated play with aggressive groundstrokes and strong court positioning, earning a dominant 6-3, 6-2 victory to put VWU on the board.

Lexi Hackbirth followed with a gritty win at #5 singles. After cruising through the opening set 6-2, Hackbirth faced resistance in the second before her opponent was forced to retire, sealing the match and giving the Marlins their second point of the afternoon. Her ability to stay composed and apply pressure early proved decisive.
