The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team opened ODAC Tournament play in dominant fashion, sweeping sixth-seeded Randolph-Macon, 5-0, in the first round on Tuesday afternoon.
The Marlins set the tone early in doubles competition, claiming two of three matches to take a 2-1 lead. At No. 3 doubles,
Zoe Vliegen and
Lexi Hackbirth cruised to a decisive 6-1 victory to put Virginia Wesleyan on the board. The duo of
Mikisha Thomas and
Jette Dammeier followed with a hard-fought 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles to secure the crucial doubles point. Randolph-Macon picked up its lone point of the match at No. 1 doubles with a 7-6 victory.
Carrying momentum into singles play, Virginia Wesleyan quickly put the match out of reach, winning four straight matches in convincing fashion.
Sarah Reich delivered a flawless performance at No. 3 singles, earning a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Jette Dammeier followed at No. 6 with a strong 6-1, 6-2 win, while
Lexi Hackbirth dominated at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-1 decision.
Jette Hafermann sealed the match at No. 4 with singles, posting a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Singles matches at No. 1 and No. 2 were left unfinished as the Marlins clinched the team victory.
With the 5-0 sweep, Virginia Wesleyan advances to the next round of the ODAC Championship Tournament, continuing its strong postseason push.
