Women's Tennis Defeats Birmingham-Southern to Finish Spring Break Trip

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's tennis team go 1-2 over spring break with a win over Birmingham-Southern College. 

Women's Tennis vs Chowan University: 1-6

The Marlins women's team faced Division II Chowan University on Wednesday, March 15 in an away match. The match was played with Division II scoring rules. The Hawks took the doubles point, winning decisively against the Marlins in all three doubles matches. 

Christine Zalameda fought hard at the #2 singles spot but ultimately fell to Feidi Abreu Rodriguez with a score of 4-6, 3-6. The highlight of the day, came from Alexa Brewster with a tight 7-5, 6-4 victory at #1 against Maria Estinvil.

Women's Tennis vs Sweet Briar College: 0-9

The Marlins faced ODAC conference opponent Sweet Briar College on Saturday, March 18. The Vixens, projected as #2 in the conference, dominated doubles with 8-1, 8-1, and 8-0 wins at the top three doubles spots, respectively. 

Shannon Lewes took an early 4-2 lead against Kate Kotany at the 4th singles spot, but ultimately fell short, losing 6-7 (2), 0-6. Christine Zalameda also fought hard against Ana Patino at #2, losing 1-6, 4-6.

Women's Tennis vs Birmingham-Southern College: 5-4

On Sunday, the Marlins battled the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern College in a neutral match at Sweet Briar. The Panthers were down a player, which gave the Marlins default wins at #3 doubles and #6 singles. 

Doubles action saw Anna Rogers and Christine Zalameda paired at #1 and Sophia Bibbo and Alexa Brewster paired at #2. The Marlins edged past the Panthers with an 8-5 victory at #1 and a 1-8 loss at #2. 

Christine Zalameda breezed past her opponent with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #2 singles. Birmingham-Southern leveled the match with wins at #3 through #5. The match came down to #1 singles where Alexa Brewster delivered under pressure for a 6-3, 6-4 win to secure the match for the Marlins.
