Big Second Quarter Push Marlins Past Phoenix 12-4

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team (1-5) defeated Wilson College 12-4.

Helen Kennedy-Butler led the team and recorded five points with two goals and three assists, and three caused turnovers, Natalie Dunn registered three goals and one assist, one ground ball, and one caused turnover, and Michaela Elston tallied three goals, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers. 

A low-scoring first quarter as each team scored one goal, Mikayla Szudera for the Marlins tallied the first goal of the contest off an assist from Helen Kennedy-Butler

The Marlins shut out the Phoenix in the second quarter outscoring the visitors 7-0 to lead 8-1 at halftime. Madison Pfister got the rally started with a feed from Shannon DeMarinis, Kennedy-Butler followed with an unassisted goal, and Camryn Gavula tallied her first goal of the season off a pass from Natalie Dunn to take a 4-1 lead. 

Michaela Elston scored as Virginia Wesleyan was killing off a penalty. Kennedy-Butler scored with an assist from Shannon DeMarinis, Dunn tallied her first of the game off a feed from Kennedy-Butler, and Mikayla Szudera scored just before halftime off a pass from Camryn Gavula to end the half up 8-1. 

Michaela Elston scored the first goal of the second half, the Phoenix responded to cut the lead to 9-2. The Marlins answered with back-to-back goals, Dunn scored unassisted, and Elston scored man-up with a feed from Camryn Gavula to extend their lead to 11-2 at the end of the third quarter. 

Wilson outscored the Marlins in the fourth 2-1, with Dunn scoring a man-up goal off a feed from Kennedy-Butler to seal to 12-4 win. 

Brittneyann Hoover got the win in the net as she played 60 minutes allowed four goals and registered six saves. Joy Ramsey led the defense with five caused turnovers and seven ground balls, Madison Pfister caused three turnovers, five ground balls, and one goal.
