Marlins put up a fight against the Hornets of Shenandoah

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Hornets of Shenandoah University on Wednesday evening at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. Three Marlins recorded double-digit figures led by Sarah Ellis with 18 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got out to an early lead going up 6-2 and pulling ahead by seven, 11-4, with 6:23 remaining on the clock. The Marlins closed the gap with a trio of baskets, one a three-pointer from Lenah Clements, another a jumper from Sarah Ellis, and the last a jumper from Adaje Williams, to knot the score at 11 all with the clock sitting at 4:25. The score evened up at 13 all, but Shenandoah scored five quick points to lead 18-13 with 15 seconds in the opening quarter. Ellis put in one last basket before the buzzer to send the teams into the second quarter with the score at 18-15. 

A pair of Meadow Dyke free throws put the Marlins down one, 18-17, however, SU pulled ahead by five points and held on to that lead until the 2:47 mark when a three-pointer by Jada Norman put the VWU within two, 28-26, and started a six-point run that gave Virginia Wesleyan a one-point advantage, 29-28, with just over a minute remaining in the half. Shenandoah added four points while VWU put a bucket in for two just before the buzzer to trail by one at the half, 32-31. 

Shenandoah opened the third quarter on a 11-0 run going up 43-31, before Virginia Wesleyan put in a pair of free throws at the 5:47 mark by Ellis. The Hornets led by as many as 14 points, 47-33, but the Marlins chipped away at their opponents' lead to trail by five points, 53-48 after closing the quarter on a 15-6 rally. 

The Hornets took control in the fourth quarter after three intense quarters of back-and-forth action on the court. SU opened up a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter that VWU could not overcome as Shenandoah went on to win 79-67. 

KEY STATS
Three Marlins recorded double-digit figures led by Sarah Ellis with 18 points while Adaje Williams added 16 points. Meadow Dyke contributed 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 11 when they travel to Salem, VA to face off against the Maroons of Roanoke College. The tipoff time is set for 2 PM.
