Marlins pick up win over Cougars on Senior Day

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team defeated the Cougars of Averett University on Wednesday afternoon on Senior Day at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. Adaje Williams led the team with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Seniors Logan Carter, Lenah Clements, and Miranda Taylor were all celebrated before the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Averett came out taking an early 7-2 lead over the Marlins as VWU's first basket did not fall until the 5:37 mark of the opening quarter. Following the jumper by Terina Dandridge, VWU added seven more points in the first quarter courtesy of four points from Jada Norman and three from Adaje Williams. AU held the 14-9 lead heading into the second quarter. 

Virginia Wesleyan climbed back within one, trailing 19-18 at the 4:27 mark following a 9-5 run and only trailed by two, 20-18 at the halftime buzzer. 

The Cougars opened up a six point lead, 24-18 coming out of the halftime break, but the Marlins did not back down as over the next five minutes, VWU went on an 11-4 rally to claim a slim one-point lead, 29-28, with 3:23 left in the third. Averett came back to reclaim a three-point lead, 32-29 (2:19), but Virginia Wesleyan closed out the third quarter on an 8-1 run to lead 37-33 heading into the final quarter of action. 

Averett pulled within two points, 37-35, to close the gap but that was the closest they came in the fourth quarter to catching the Marlins. VWU used a 17-point fourth quarter to pull away from AU and held an 11 point lead at one point en route to the 54-44 victory over the Cougars. 

KEY STATS
The Marlins were led by Adaje Williams with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jada Norman contributed 12 points, while Sarah Ellis and Meadow Dyke tallied six points each. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 18, when they travel to Salem, Virginia to face Hollins University in the regular season finale.
