Williams and Ellis lead Marlins against the Eagles of Bridgewater

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Eagles of Bridgewater College on Monday evening at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. A pair of Marlins recorded double-digit figures led by Adaje Williams with 15 points and Sarah Ellis with 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marlins opened the scoring with a three-pointer from Jada Norman a minute and a half into the game, but the Eagles responded quickly with a three of their own to even the score at three all. VWU pulled ahead by two, 5-3, following a pair of free throws from Meadow Dyke, but BC went on an 8-2 run taking an 11-7 lead with 4:24 left in the first. Virginia Wesleyan closed the gap to one point twice, at 13-12 and 15-14, but Bridgewater put a three-point buffer between the two squads heading in the second quarter with a 17-14 lead.

BC's lead grew to seven points, 21-14, before VWU went on an eight-point run taking a 22-21 lead following a jumper from Dyke with 2:46 left in the second quarter. The teams traded the lead three times and tied the score twice in the final two and a half minutes as Bridgewater held a slim one-point lead, 25-24 at the halftime buzzer. 

An 18-point third quarter gave the Eagles the push they needed to separate from the Marlins in the second half as VWU managed just nine points coming out of the halftime break. 

Virginia Wesleyan pulled as close as seven points, trailing 47-40 as the clock ticked under the seven-minute mark. Bridgewater took off from there going on a 17-6 run the remaining minutes to claim the 64-46 victory. 

KEY STATS
Two Marlins recorded double-digit figures led by Adaje Williams with 15 points and nine rebounds and Sarah Ellis with 10 of her own. Meadow Dyke added eight points and six rebounds. Williams led the team with 14 rebounds. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 4, when they head to Greensboro, NC to face the Quakers of Guilford College. The tipoff time is set for 2 PM.
