Marlins fall to Shenandoah Hornets in midweek road contest

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Hornets of Shenandoah University 79-42. The Marlins were led by Adaje Williams and Jada Norman with eight points each. Sarah Ellis was close behind with seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams sat even at two all with 8:37 in the opening quarter after Adaje Williams scored a jumper under the basket. From there the Hornets pulled away scoring an additional 21 points while holding the Marlins to just four more points the rest of the first quarter leading 23-6 heading into the second. 

VWU scored 13 points in the second quarter while holding SU to 10 points as the teams went into the halftime break with Shenandoah leading Virginia Wesleyan 33-19. The Marlins had only scored four points through the opening five minutes of the second quarter and added the remaining nine in the final three and a half minutes heading into the break trailing by 14 points. 

Shenandoah really kicked up the energy scoring 26 points in the third quarter while holding Virginia Wesleyan to just seven points. The teams headed into the fourth quarter with the score sitting at 59-26.

The Hornets continued to apply the pressure scoring an additional 20 points in the fourth quarter. The Marlins, however, scored 16 points to put their total at 42 for the contest. Unfortunately Shenandoah's lead was too great to overcome as SU won 79-42. 

KEY STATS
The Marlins were led by Sarah Ellis with 10 points and Adaje Williams with nine. Nat Collier scored seven points while both Sydnee Washington and Sariya Monroe both added six apiece. Washington and Monroe also both recorded seven rebounds. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team returns to action on January 14, when they return to TowneBank Arena to host the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg. The tipoff time is set for 2 PM.
