Williams posts 19 points to lead the Marlins in home game against the Hornets

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg 74-40 on Saturday afternoon at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins were led by Adaje Williams with 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Sarah Ellis also collected 10 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams were pretty even through the first six minutes of the game as the Hornets only led the Marlins by three points, 12-9 with 4:04 remaining in the opening quarter. In the remaining, three and a half minutes Lynchburg went on an 8-0 run to take a 20-9 lead into the second quarter.

The Marlins came as close as 11 points in the second quarter, 27-16 (5:50), but the Hornets pulled ahead by 17 points, 39-22 at the halftime buzzer. All 13 points for the Marlins came from Adaje Williams and Sarah Ellis who scored six and seven points respectively. 

Both teams were slow to score in the third quarter as the Marlins were held to six points while Virginia Wesleyan held Lynchburg to only 11 points. Williams scored all six points for VWU in the third quarter. Lynchburg led by 22 points, 50-28 heading into the final quarter. 

Virginia Wesleyan added 12 more points to its total in the final frame while Lynchburg added 24 to its score putting the final total at 74-40. 

KEY STATS
The Marlins were led by Adaje Williams with 19 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Sarah Ellis also collected 10 rebounds while adding seven points for the Marlins.

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team returns to action on January 18, when they hit the road to take on the Cougars from Averett University in Danville, VA. The tipoff time is set for 5 PM.
