Marlins edge past Eagles in midweek ODAC Match up

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team narrowly edged past the Eagles of Bridgewater College 11-10 on Wednesday afternoon at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA. Natalie Dunn led the way for the Marlins with four goals.

GAME RECAP
The Marlins started things off with three goals in the first quarter while holding the Eagles off the board taking a 3-0 lead into the second quarter. Michaela Elston scored the first goal off a pass from Helen Kennedy-Butler. Natalie Dunn added the second goal while Sam Hill scored the third again off a Kennedy-Butler pass. 

Bridgewater outscored Virginia Wesleyan in the second quarter 4-1, as the teams entered halftime evened up at four all. The lone VWU goal came from Elston with Breanna Sviland recording the assist. 

The Marlins came out of the break on a 3-1 run scoring all three goals in the first eight minutes of the third quarter. Camryn Gavula got on the board with a goal at the 10:15 mark following a pass from Hill. Two minutes later, Kennedy-Butler scored back-to-back goals, ne unassisted while the other came from Dunn, that put the Marlins up 7-5. 

Bridgewater scored four unanswered goals to close out the third and start the fourth quarter going up 9-7 with less than nine and a half minutes to play. The Marlins rallied and answered with four consecutive goals of their own to take an 11-9 lead. Three of the four VWU goals came from Natalie Dunn, while the final Marlin goal came from Sviland with 29 seconds left.

The women's lacrosse team is back in action this Saturday, April 23rd, when they hit the road to Winchester, VA, for an ODAC pairing against the Hornets of Shenandoah University. First draw is set for 4 PM.
