Quartet of Marlins record hat tricks in women's lacrosse win over Bethany College

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - Four athletes on the Virginia Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team each tallied three goals apiece in the Marlins 17-2 victory over the Bison of Bethany College (WVa.) on Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA.

GAME RECAP
The Marlins opened the match with a goal 21 second into the contest as Helen Kennedy-Butler hit the back of the net off a pass from Natalie Dunn. Bethany evened the score at one all a little over a minute later (13:24) but 15 seconds after the draw control, Virginia Wesleyan struck again as Sam Hill scored off the pass by Michaela Elston.

BC added their only other goal at the 8:53 mark of the first quarter to tie the score at two all, but from there the Marlins took off scoring 15 unanswered goals throughout the remainder of the game to claim the 17-2 win. 

VWU added four more goals in the first quarter to take a 6-2 lead into the second quarter. Mikayla Szudera, HKB, Breanna Sviland, and Caroline Engle all contributed to the four final goals of the first. 

Dunn, Szudera, and Elston helped drive the Marlins lead up to 9-2 with three goals in the second quarter. 

Coming out of the halftime break, Virginia Wesleyan added four goals in the third quarter courtesy of Dunn (2), Elston, and Camryn Gavula. VWU closed out the final quarter with four more goals, one each from HKB, Elston, Szudera, and Callahan.

UP NEXT
The women's lacrosse team is back in action on Wednesday, March 16, when they host the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in a rematch of the 2020 season finale that was the last VWU event prior to the COVID-19 shutdown. The USMMA won in overtime 16-15. First draw is set for 5 PM at Birdsong Field.
