Marlins fall in the Battle of the Wesleyans

ROCKY MOUNT, NC - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan University 72-54. The Marlins were led by Nat Collier with 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bishops took an early lead going up by six, 8-2, by the 6:30 mark of the opening quarter. A pair of Marlin layups pulled the visiting Wesleyan team within two points, 8-6, but the Battling Bishops reclaimed an eight-point lead, 16-8, with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter. Three points by Lenah Clements and four from Nat Collier pulled VWU within one point, 16-15, with 38 seconds left on the clock. NCWU got the final basket of the first quarter with 28 seconds remaining to take an 18-15 lead into the second period. 

Two quick baskets by Virginia Wesleyan put the Marlins in the lead, 19-18, but North Carolina Wesleyan reclaimed the lead 23-19 less than a minute later. VWU evened things up at 23 all at 6:37 on the clock, but NCWU used the remaining time of the second period to take a ten-point lead, 42-32, into the halftime break. 

VWU came out in the third quarter to pull within six points, 48-42 after Logan Carter connected on a jumper at 6:15. The Marlins scored just four more points the remainder of the third as they trailed by ten points, 56-46 heading into the fourth quarter.

Virginia Wesleyan pulled within four points, 58-54 (6:56), after starting the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run. The Battling Bishops halted the Marlins holding them scoreless for the remainder of the game while closing out the remaining time on a 14-0 run to claim the 72-54 win. 

KEY STATS
The Marlins were led by Nat Collier with 12 points. Meadow Dyke added nine points and three steals in 34 minutes played. Adaje Williams and Asante Brown tallied eight points each. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team returns to action on January 7, when they hit the road to head to Lynchburg, VA, to take on Randolph College. The tipoff time is set for 2 PM.
