VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball fell to the Maroons of Roanoke College 57-56 on Saturday afternoon at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. Despite a 28-point fourth quarter rally, the Marlins fell just short of up-ending the Maroons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marlins opened the game with an old-fashioned three-point play from
Sydnee Washington before the Maroons scored three consecutive baskets to pull ahead 6-3. The Marlins battled throughout the first quarter and knotted the score at 13 all heading into the second period.
Roanoke held Virginia Wesleyan to just five points in the second quarter while scoring 16 of their own to take a 29-18, 11-point advantage into the halftime break.
The Maroons continued to roll in the third quarter holding on to a double-digit lead throughout the 10 minutes of action. Roanoke outscored Virginia Wesleyan 15-10 in the third frame taking a 44-28 lead into the final ten minute period.
The Marlins came to life in the fourth quarter scoring 28 points while holding the Maroons to 13 points. The teams traded baskets to open the fourth quarter but VWU scored five points to cut the RC lead to 10 points. Virginia Wesleyan went on an 8-0 run closing the gap to four points, 49-45, with four minutes remaining in the period. Roanoke reclaimed a double-digit lead, 55-45, with a minute and eight seconds remaining, however, an old-fashioned three-point play from
Asante Brown sparked a Marlins run. In a 59 second window, the Marlins scored 11 points, three from Brown, five from
Adaje Williams, and a clutch three pointer from
Jada Norman with nine seconds left that tied the game at 56 points each. Roanoke managed to get a foul called in their favor making one of the two shots to pull ahead 57-56, while the Marlins last shot fell short as the Maroons narrowly escaped with the win.
KEY STATS
The Marlins were led by pair of first years in
Asante Brown and
Sarah Ellis who tallied 12 and 11 points respectively.
Adaje Williams added nine points. Williams,
Nat Collier, and
Jada Norman each grabbed seven rebounds.
