Ellis and Williams lead Marlins against Monarchs

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball fell to the Monarchs of Methodist University 60-50 on Monday evening at the Riddle Center in Fayetteville, NC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marlins led 3-1 early to start the game but the Monarchs went on a 10-point run taking an 11-3 lead around the six-minute mark. Both teams scored eight points in the remaining minutes of the first quarter as MU led VWU 19-11 heading into the second quarter. 

Methodist opened up a double-digit lead in the second quarter after the Marlins had closed the game to eight points, 23-15 (6:39). At the end of the second quarter, the Monarchs held a 37-19 lead, an 18-point advantage. 

The Marlins held the Monarchs to 12 points in the third quarter while scoring 11 points of their own to put the score at 49-30 heading into the fourth. 

Virginia Wesleyan used nearly the entire fourth quarter to chip away at Methodist's 20-point lead to pull within six points, 56-50, with 43 seconds remaining on the clock. The Monarchs held the Marlins off the scoreboard in the final minute while scoring four points off of free throws to claim the win 60-50.

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 15, when they return to TowneBank Arena to host the Mustangs of Mid-Atlantic Christian University. Tip-off is set for 5 PM just before the men's game against Christopher Newport University at 7 PM.
