Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University Women's Soccer team knocked off the No. 13 Eagles of the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse 2-1 in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship. The Marlins will face the No. 3 Captains of Christopher Newport University, the hosts of this weekend's sectionals, at 3 PM on Sunday afternoon at the CNU Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Marlins (18-2-3) got on the scoreboard first in the 17th as a through ball from
Alexis Miller to
Shyenne Diaz connected with the back of the net for Diaz's 13th goal of the season. Virginia Wesleyan added an insurance goal 13 minutes later in the 30th minute as senior defender
Sam Crawford collected her first collegiate goal after corralling a loose ball in the box off an
Olivia Bryant corner kick. After coming out of the halftime break, UW-LC pulled within one scoring their lone goal of the match in the 59th minute. Following the Eagle goal, the Marlins tightened up their defense and held firm holding off the No. 13 Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles 2-1.
Virginia Wesleyan punched its ticket to the "Elite 8" for the first time since 2006 and the third time in program history. The victory gives the Eagles (21-2-1) their second loss on the season and first loss to Virginia Wesleyan in two matches. Both matches were 2-1 results and have been decided by one goal.
The Eagles outshot the Marlins 18 to nine including a nine-to-four advantage in shots on goal. VWU keeper
Rachel Quigley earned the win while making eight saves throughout the game.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to the pitch tomorrow afternoon as they take on the reigning National Champions in the No. 3 Captains of Christopher Newport University. Kickoff is set for 3 PM at CNU Soccer Stadium for the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. Tomorrow's match is the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
