Women's Soccer primed for NCAA 'Sweet 16' Round of Championship Tournament

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va -- The Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer team is moving on up the Round of 16 in the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. The Marlins take to the field again this weekend, Nov. 19, at nearby Christopher Newport University. Continue reading for more information.

The Marlins have advanced to the 'Sweet 16' round of the 2022 Women's Soccer Championship Tournament and will face No. 21 Wisconsin - La Crosse on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 3:30 PM. The match between the Marlins and Red Hawks follows the 1 PM game between the No. 3 Christopher Newport University Captains and the No. 9 Trinity University (TX) Tigers.

Nearby rival Christopher Newport University is the host institution for the 'Sweet 16' and 'Elite 8'/Quarterfinal rounds with the weekend winner advancing to the Final Four out in Salem, VA on December 2-4. Visit the tournament central page here.

In order to reach the sectional round the Marlins had to get through a pair of tough teams in the opening round as VWU hosted the Loggers of Puget Sound, whom the Marlins defeated 3-0, and the No. 23/14 Profs of Rowan University, who VWU handed their first loss of the season in a 1-0 result.

Leading the offense for the Marlins this season has been a quartet of attackers in Shyenne Diaz, Alexis Miller, Olivia Bryant, and Molly Gobble. On the back line Virginia Wesleyan has been bolstered by senior defender Sam Crawford, sophomore Kaitlyn Duswalt, juniors Lexi Soteriou and Rachel Wilson, and junior keeper Rachel Quigley

Virginia Wesleyan advances to the sectional round for the first time in 16 years when the Marlins last made a run to the Final Four in 2006. VWU has qualified for 11 NCAA Tournaments since 2006, all under the direction of Head Coach Jeff Bowers

Fans can support the Marlins in person at the CNU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 19. Tickets are $8 for Adults and $5 for children. Any current VWU student that registers with Student Activities before the game can receive free tickets. If you cannot make the game, tune in at the following links.  VIDEO  |  LIVE STATS
