VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Quakers of Guilford University 58-37 on Wednesday evening at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The start of the game was a back-and-forth between the two squads as the teams traded baskets and the lead five different times in the first five and a half minutes. With 5:33 left in the first, Guilford connected on a pair of free throws to go ahead 8-6 and the Quakers never looked back. Back-to-back baskets by
Lenah Clements pulled Virginia Wesleyan within three points, 14-11, as the teams went into the second quarter with the score at 15-11.
A pair of
Sariya Monroe free throws pulled VWU within two points, 15-13, before GC went on a 9-0 run taking a 24-13 lead with 6:20 remaining in the first half. The Marlins closed of the second quarter on a 7-0 to close the gap to 24-21 as the teams entered halftime.
Guilford held Virginia Wesleyan to six points in the third quarter while adding 16 to their total driving the score up to 40-27. Two of the Marlin points came from
Adaje Williams while the remaining four were scored by Monroe.
The Marlins climbed within 10 points, 40-30, however, the Quaker lead was too great for VWU to overcome as GC claimed a 58-37 victory.
Virginia Wesleyan Leaders
The Marlins were led by
Sariya Monroe with 10 points while
Jada Norman added nine points.
Adaje Williams added six points and rebounds of her own. Monroe led the team with nine rebounds and
Nat Collier added seven.
Quaker Leaders
The Quakers were led by Lindsay Gauldin and J'la Hinson with 14 points each, while Anna Giannopoulou added 13 points to round out the double-digit scorers for Guilford. Gauldin led the team with 12 rebounds while Carleigh Perry was close behind with 11 rebounds.

Joining the Marlins in the weekend events are Salem College, Mary Baldwin University, and the University of Mary Washington. The first game tips off at 4 PM on Saturday afternoon.
