Women’s basketball defeats Salem Spirit behind Williams' 17 points

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball defeated the Spirit of Salem College 73-50 on Saturday evening at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. Adaje Williams scored 17 points to lead the Marlins on day one of the TowneBank Tipoff Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The start of the game was a back-and-forth between the two squads as the teams sat even at seven points each after the first five and a half minutes. With 3:46 left in the first, Virginia Wesleyan scored three consecutive baskets taking a 13-7 lead with 2:43 on the clock. Salem closed the gap to three points, 13-10, as the teams entered the second quarter. 

Salem closed the Virginia Wesleyan lead to one point, 16-15, on an old-fashioned three-point play at 9:14, but the Marlins pulled away on a 13-0 run that put VWU ahead 29-15 as the clock ticked under six minutes until halftime. Virginia Wesleyan held on to a double-digit lead throughout the second half as they closed out the final six minutes on an 8-6 run, leading 37-21 at the halftime break. 

Coming out of the break, the Spirit cut the Marlins lead to 11 points, 44-33, with 4:40 left in the third quarter after outscoring VWU 12-7. Virginia Wesleyan responded with a 12-0 run pulling ahead 56-33 by the two-minute mark, and held a 60-38 lead with one final quarter remaining. 

The two teams played about even in the fourth quarter as VWU score 13 points while SC added 12 in the last ten minutes. The Marlins led by as many as 27 points, 73-46, and held on to win 73-50 to improve to 2-2 on the season.

Key Stats
The Marlins were led by Adaje Williams with 17 points and seven rebounds. Nat Collier scored 12 points and also added seven rebounds, while Jada Norman was the last Marlin in double-digits with 10 points. Sydnee Washington added nine and Sarah Ellis eight.

The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team is back in action tomorrow, November 20, when they close action at the 2022 TowneBank Tip-off Classic. Salem College and the University of Mary Washington play at 2 PM with Virginia Wesleyan and Mary Baldwin University following at 4 PM.
