Women’s basketball opens the season at Salisbury University

SALISBURY, Md. - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a road loss at the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Sea Gulls opened the game on a 6-0 run before the Marlins got on the board behind a three-pointer from Nat Collier with 4:44 on the clock. Virginia Wesleyan climbed within one, 10-9, after a 6-4 run that saw points scored by Sydnee Washington and Sarah Ellis. Salisbury closed out the opening quarter on a 7-4 run taking a 17-13 lead into the second 10-minute period. 

Salisbury really opened things up in the second quarter coming out of the timeout on a 12-2 run that put SU ahead 29-15 with six minutes in the half. The Marlins added one other basket in the second half as the Sea Gulls carried a 39-17 lead into the intermission. 

The teams traded basket for basket to open the third quarter as the score sat at 48-23 with 7:17 remaining in the third. SU held VWU to six more points in the third while scoring 22 to close the third quarter with a 60-29 lead. 

Virginia Wesleyan scored seven points in the fourth quarter on five free throws and a Terina Dandridge jumper that put the Marlins final count at 36. Salisbury added 17 points to their tally winning the game 77-36.

KEY STATS
  • Adaje Williams and Sarah Ellis led the team with eight points each. 
  • Natalia Collier led the defense with six rebounds and added five points as the third leading scorer.
