Team records fall on opening weekend

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan Men's and Women's swim teams opened their season on October 7th with a dual meet against the Knights of Southern Virginia University at the Rockbridge Aquatics Center in Lexington, VA. The Marlins men's team was outscored by the Knights 54-142, while the women were outscored 79.5 - 155.5. Freshman Cael Long had a big showing at his first collegiate-level meet taking home two wins and breaking the team record in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 1:05.56.

The following day, the Marlins headed directly to ODAC Relays hosted by Washington and Lee, also in Lexington, VA.  The Marlins Women finished 6th overall, and the men finished 8th.  Long had another strong showing leading off the 3x100 Individual Medley Relay with a school recording break time of 57.31.

INSIDE THE RESULTS
Dual meet against Southern Virginia University:
  • Freshman Cael Long records two first-place finishes, in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 54.57 and in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:05.56, earning him the team record in that event.
  • The quartet of senior captain Chloe Dewberry, freshman MK Morris Larkin, freshman Abi Carlson, and sophomore Audrey Roberts finished second in the women's 200 yard Medley Relay (2:05.76)
  • Lauren Hendricks finishes second in the 200-yard Freestyle with a time of 2:11.86
  • Dewberry and Dyer team up to go second and third in the 50-yard backstroke.  Chloe Dewberry with a time of 32.50, and Sophia Dyer with a time of 32.99
  • Kelsey Kisner and Sam Vos also team up to go second and third in the 100-yard Butterfly with times of 1:06.10 and 1:11.61
  • Lauren Hendricks and Audrey Roberts grab another two/three finish in the 50-yard Freestyle with times of 27.49 and 27.69
  • Luke Bukowski grads a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.13
  • Freshman Logan Schohn finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:31.23, which is just 12 seconds over the team record. 
  • In addition to her second-place finish in the 100-yard Butterfly, Kelsey Kisner also finished second in the 50-yard Butterfly with a time of 30.20

ODAC Relays:
  • The Marlins Women finished 6th overall, and the men finished 8th.  Long had another strong showing leading off the 3x100 Individual Medley Relay with a school recording break time of 57.31.
  • Marlins Women finished 12th out of 21 in the 3x50 backstroke, with a team of freshman Sophia Dyer, sophomore Lauren Hendricks, and senior Chloe Dewberry.
  • Marlins Men took 14th place in the 3x50 yard breaststroke, with a team of freshman Cael Long, junior Eddie McDonald, and sophomore Luke Bukowski.

UP NEXT
The Marlins return to the pool, Saturday, Oct. 15, when they compete against Randolph College and Saint Mary's College of Maryland in Lynchburg, VA.
