Virginia Wesleyan closed out the three-day Yellow Jacket Invitational with several finals appearances and steady contributions from each Marlin who entered the meet.
The weekend opened with the 800-yard freestyle relay, where the A squad of Erin Beaudry, Suzanna Fernandez, Lora Young, and Ella Boal combined for an 11th-place finish in 8:57.27. Beaudry led off with a 2:11.96 split, followed by Fernandez at 2:14.28, Young at 2:18.72, and Boal at 2:12.31 to complete the relay's four legs.
Virginia Wesleyan also entered both swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle, where junior Suzanna Fernandez posted a 26th-place time of 5:37.58, and sophomore Lora Young added a 34th-place finish in 5:52.45. Young returned for the 100-yard butterfly, where she placed 31st in 1:08.86 to close out her butterfly racing for the weekend.
The sprints provided VWU's strongest front-end placing as sophomore Emery Garza advanced to the championship final of the 50-yard freestyle, ultimately finishing 8th with a 24.77. First-year Lana Macchi added another scoring performance with a 15th-place effort of 25.22, giving the Marlins two top-15 finishers in the event.
Garza carried that momentum into the 100-yard backstroke, where she qualified for finals after a 1:01.48 prelim and concluded the event in the evening session with a final result listed at ninth in prelims and advancing into the scoring heats. Junior Suzanna Fernandez also reached the finals in the 100 back after swimming 1:03.30 in prelims, giving the Marlins two athletes contesting the event in scoring rounds of competition.
Both Garza and Fernandez returned for the 200-yard backstroke, where Garza delivered a 13th-place finish in 2:14.76, and Fernandez won her bonus-final heat to secure 17th place in 2:14.55, marking one of VWU's best combined finishes of the meet.
The Marlins closed the weekend in the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the A team of Beaudry, Macchi, Garza, and Fernandez posted a complete effort to conclude VWU's participation in the final session of the invitational, giving Virginia Wesleyan its last set of points as the meet wrapped.
