Field Hockey defeats the Knights of Southern Virginia 10-0

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team shutout the Knights of Southern Virginia University 10-0 on Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Catherine Dozier recorded a hat trick while Nicole Kemon added a pair of goals as seven different Marlins scored in the contest.

FIRST QUARTER

  • The Marlins started off hot scoring their first goal less than a minute into the action as Catherine Dozier hit the back of the cage off the pass from Stephanie Hoke.
  • Four minutes later, VWU scored its second goal off the stick of Nicole Kemon with the assist from Hoke.
  • A minute later Dozier again found the back of the cage, this time off a pass from Kemon, to put the Marlins up 3-0. 

SECOND QUARTER

  • Lexie Thomas scored the lone goal of the second quarter for the Marlins who took a 4-0 lead into the halftime break.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Three minutes into the return to action, Virginia Wesleyan struck again as Olivia Winslow scored her first collegiate goal. 
  • In the 39th minute, Jaiden Shaw found a goal off the assisted pass from Lauren Hedspeth putting VWU up 6-0.
  • Just before the third quarter ended, the Marlins scored their seventh goal as Kemon connected with a pass from Shaw with 37 seconds remaining in the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Two minutes into the fourth quarter VWU scored its eighth goal of the math as Julia Strohman connected with a Willow Baker pass.
  • Just over a minute later, Hedspeth scored with a rocket of a shot to put VWU up 9-0.
  • Virginia Wesleyan closed out the scoring in the 53rd minute with their tenth goal, and third from Dozier, as Dozier wrangled in the pass from Emma Lankford to put the ball in the back of the cage.

The field hockey team is back in action at Birdsong Field on Tuesday, Sept. 28, when they host the Avenging Angels of Meredith College. The match is slated to begin at 6 PM in Virginia Beach, VA.
