The Virginia Wesleyan field hockey team opened Senior Day on a high note Saturday afternoon, but ultimately fell 3-1 to Shenandoah at Birdsong Field.
Before the start of the game, the Virginia Wesleyan Field Hockey program took a moment to honor its five member senior class, which included;
Dani Poulsen,
Ava Stauch,
Mary Ruffin,
Hannah Gautreaux, and
DJ Holsclaw.
The Marlins struck first just over ten minutes into the game when
Landry Meyer converted a penalty stroke to give Virginia Wesleyan a 1-0 lead. The defense, anchored by
Ashlyn Boykin, who tallied a defensive save, and goalkeeper
DJ Holsclaw, who recorded an impressive nine saves, kept Shenandoah off the board through the first half.
Shenandoah rallied after the break, netting two goals in the third quarter and another in the fourth to secure the win. Virginia Wesleyan continued to battle, with Meyer leading the offense with three shots on goal, while
Kellyn McCloud and
Dani Poulsen each added one.
Despite the loss, the Marlins showcased strong effort and determination in front of their home crowd, as they honored their senior class for their dedication to the program.
