The Virginia Wesleyan field hockey team (5-8, 2-3 ODAC) faced a tough test on Wednesday night, falling 7-0 to nationally ranked No. 17 Lynchburg at Birdsong Field.
The Hornets (12-3, 5-0 ODAC) struck early, finding the back of the cage just over a minute into the contest and adding another goal in the second quarter to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Lynchburg's offense surged in the third frame, scoring four goals to put the game out of reach before tacking on one final tally in the closing minutes.
Goalkeeper DJ Holsclaw turned in an impressive performance despite the scoreline, recording 14 saves on 26 shots faced. Landry Meyer led the Marlins with two of the team's three shots, including one that hit the post late in the second quarter. Isabelle Rogers also registered a shot on goal.
Virginia Wesleyan generated offensive chances in the first half, earning two penalty corners, but were unable to convert against the Hornets' strong defensive unit.
