Marlins Defeated by Roanoke in ODAC Play

The Virginia Wesleyan field hockey team (5-9, 2-4 ODAC) fell 2-0 to Roanoke (5-10, 3-3 ODAC) on Saturday afternoon in Salem, Virginia.

Roanoke took the lead late in the first quarter and carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime. The Maroons added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Virginia Wesleyan had several strong scoring opportunities. Ava Stauch was active in the midfield, earning four penalty corners and putting one shot on goal early in the second quarter. Kellyn McCloud added a pair of quality looks, including a late attempt that was turned away in the closing minutes.

Goalkeeper DJ Holsclaw anchored the Marlins' defense with three saves, including a key stop midway through the second quarter that kept the deficit at one. The Marlins totaled eight shots and five penalty corners, matching Roanoke in both categories.

Virginia Wesleyan will return home on Wednesday, October 29, for a 5:00 p.m. ODAC matchup against Randolph-Macon College at Birdsong Field.
