Women's soccer falls 4-0 in the ODAC semifinals to W&L

Box Score LEXINGTON, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team fell to the Generals of Washington and Lee University 4-0 in the semifinal round of the 2020-21 Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament on Friday, April 9, in Lexington, VA.

FIRST HALF
  • Washington and Lee found the opening score three minutes into the contest as Chloe Rapier scored off the pass in off the corner kick from Cameron Grainger to give the Generals an early 1-0 lead. 
  • The Generals maintained possession of the ball for another 15 minutes getting five shots off including one on goal before the tide changed and Virginia Wesleyan gained the momentum. 
  • VWU controlled the ball keeping it in the W&L defensive half for about 20 minutes and the Marlins got off a really good shot on goal by Carleigh Van Reenen that went just over the top crossbar. 
  • W&L got a shot off with about 11 minutes remaining in the half that hit off the right post and rolled across the front of the goal before being cleared by a Marlin defender to avoid the second General goal.
SECOND HALF
  • Washington and Lee controlled possession of the ball the majority of the second half as they added three goals to secure their lead en route to a 4-0 victory.
KEY STATS
  • Sam Crawford led the team with two shots on goal while the team totaled four SOG in the match with the remaining two coming from Gracie Mullins and Adrianna Gunther.
  • Rachel Quigley (L: 3-2) gave up four goals while also making five saves including stopping a penalty kick late in the game. 
UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan's season comes to an end in the semifinal round of the 2020-21 ODAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. The Marlins will return to action this fall when they compete in the 2021-22 athletic year.
