Marlins season ends in ODAC quarterfinals at Washington & Lee

Box Score LEXINGTON, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell the Generals of Washington and Lee 109-67 in the quarterfinal game of the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament. The Marlins season ends with a record of 5-7 overall and 4-4 against ODAC foes while the Generals move to 5-2 and 3-1 en route to punching their ticket to the ODAC Semifinals.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the teams trading baskets and tying the score three time in the first 1:40 of the game as the score sat at 7-7 with 8:20 remaining in the first. W&L added six points to lead 13-7 before VWU could find its next basket pulling back within four, 13-9. Five more points by the Generals doubled their lead over the Marlins who trailed 18-9 until Celeste Rucker closed that to seven, 18-11, after successfully converting a pair of free throws. W&L opened up a 10-point lead, 23-12, following a three-pointer with 3:22 left in the first and held the double-digit advantage at the end of the quarter 34-20.

W&L added three points to start the second quarter before Sabrina Jones hit a three to get VWU some points putting the score at 37-23 with 8:38 in the half. A three-pointer for the Generals increased their lead to 20 points with the score sitting at 46-25 with 6:32 on the clock. The Marlins added eight points to their score throughout the remainder of the half while W&L put up an additional 20 to lead 66-33 at the halftime buzzer. 

Returning to action, Washington and Lee put the first points up in the third but Virginia Wesleyan put four up off a free throw from Jessica Jennings and an old-fashioned three-point play from Adaje Williams. As the clock ticked under six minutes left in the third, the Generals led by 38 points, 75-37, however the Marlins kept playing as S'Zahria Jones converted five of six free throw attempts closing the lead to 75-42. Including the five free throws, S'Zahria scored 16 of the Marlins 22 points in the third quarter. The teams headed into the final ten minutes with the Generals leading 89-55. 

The Marlins in the fourth quarter scored just 12 points, six from freshman S'Zahria Jones, while Washington and Lee added 20 to conclude the game with the 109-67 victory. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by S'Zahria Jones with 25 points, 22 coming in the second half alone, and tied for second in rebounds with five. Adaje Williams added 15 points and six rebounds while senior Sabrina Jones rounded out the top scorers with 10 points and five rebounds. 

WASHINGTON AND LEE LEADERS
The Generals were led by Erin Hughes with 24 points. Hanna Malik added 22, and Megan Horn put up 15 points to round out the top three. Lynn Johnson and Erin Addison both tallied 11 points and Jordan Diehl was the last in double-digits with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
