Field Hockey falls 3-2 against Royals of Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team fell to the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon in ODAC competition.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Eastern Mennonite took the lead early as the Royals scored two and a half minutes into the game on a Skylar Hedgepeth penalty corner.
  • Meme Dawson stopped four more shots before letting a second goal past with a minute and a half remaining in the opening quarter as Morgan Tricarico scored off the pass from Hedgepeth.

SECOND QUARTER

  • The Marlins managed to get a shot off in the second quarter while holding the Royals to just two as the teams entered halftime with EMU leading 2-0.

THIRD QUARTER

  • A different Virginia Wesleyan team came out of the halftime break as the Marlins got off six shots in the 15 minute span.
  • VWU found the scoreboard with two and half minutes remaining in the third to cut the Royals lead to one goal, 2-1, after Hayden Thornbrugh scored on a penalty corner.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Virginia Wesleyan continued their aggressive play in the fourth quarter and knotted the score at two all as Raquel Kelly found her first goal of the season. 
  • The Royals took control the remaining eight minutes as EMU got off five more shots including a second goal from Tricarico to give Eastern Mennonite at 3-2 lead which they held on to until the final horn picking up the win over Virginia Wesleyan.

KEY STATS

  • The Marlins offense was led by Julie Fassl with three shots. 
  • Raquel Kelly and Hayden Thornbrugh bot scored their first goals of the season as each had two shots in the game. 
  • Meme Dawson (L: 0-1, 0-1) played her first game in goal for the Marlins this season and gave up three goals on eight shots while making five saves.

The field hockey team returns home for their next contest on Friday, March 19th, when they host the Hornets of Shenandoah University. The match is set to start at 4 PM at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach, VA.
