Marlins fall to Eagles of Bridgewater

Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Eagles of Bridgewater College 92-63 on Tuesday evening in an ODAC road contest in Bridgewater, VA.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Marlins getting on the board first with a layup by Danielle Lehner but the Eagles responded with a pair of three-pointers to go up 6-2. VWU knotted the score at six all but a foul by Sabrina Jones allowed Bridgewater a pair of free throws, both of which were good. The two free throws started a 12-0 rally for the Eagles that put them up 18-6 with two and a half minutes to play in the first quarter. The Marlins added four points in the final minutes of the first and headed into the second quarter trailing BC 20-10.

Bridgewater scored a quick eight points in the opening three minutes of the second increasing their lead to 16 points, 28-12. Over the next couple of minutes VWU put together six points but BC scored five to keep a double-digit lead of 15 points, 33-18, with just under five minutes left in the half. Both teams were held to seven points the remainder of quarter as the score sat 40-25 at the halftime break.

The third quarter saw the Eagles claim a 21-point advantage over the Marlins, 46-25, with 9:10 on the clock. A 6-2 spurt by VWU cut the lead to 17, 48-31, but a three pointer by Bridgewater reopened the Eagles 20-point lead with 7:40 to play. The next six minutes saw a 16-5 run by the Eagles who increased their lead to 31 points with the score sitting at 67-36 with under two minutes remaining in the third. Virginia Wesleyan put up six points in the last two minutes while Bridgewater added eight to their total taking the teams into the final ten minutes of action with BC leading 75-42.

A 9-2 run to start the fourth quarter put the Eagles up by 40 points, 84-44, with 7:10 on the clock, but the Marlins responded and closed out the game on a 19-6 rally to put the final score at 92-63 with Bridgewater emerging as the victors. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Sabrina Jones with 15 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Bianca Atkinson was second on the team in points with 13, while Logan Carter and Danielle Lehner rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively. 

BRIDGEWATER LEADERS
The Eagles were led by Jada Gross coming in off the bench to dish out 19 points for the Eagles. Ahlia Moone added 14 points while Taylor Stafford put up 13 points and Jaden Alsberry contributed 12 points.

The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins will return to action on Friday, Feb. 12, when they take to the road for an ODAC contest at Shenandoah University. Tip off is set for 7 PM. Per ODAC policies, no fans will be allowed in the game so fans can follow the game here. VIDEO   |   STATS
