Buzzer beater by Sabrina Jones pushes Marlins past Panthers

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team defeated the Panthers of Ferrum College 81-79 with a buzzer beater by Sabrina Jones on Saturday afternoon at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. The Marlins move to 5-6 on the season and 4-4 against ODAC foes while Ferrum moves to 1-9 and 1-8. 

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with Ferrum getting off to a 7-0 lead before Virginia Wesleyan got on the board with a three-pointer by Jessica Jennings. The Panthers went on another run of eight points to go up by 12, 15-3, with five minutes left in the first quarter. VWU chipped away at the FC lead to trail by nine, 21-12, at the end of the first. 

VWU continued to cut the FC lead as the Marlins pulled within three points, 25-22 (7:13), following a 10-4 run by the home team. The Panthers reopened a nine-point lead, 36-27 (2:51), after an 11-5 rally and the lead grew to 12 points at the halftime horn as Ferrum led 42-30.

Ferrum led by double-digits for a majority of the third quarter until the 2:59 mark when Jennings connected on a jumper to pull within five points, 57-52, of the Panthers. At the end of the third quarter, Ferrum led by five 61-56. 

The final quarter began with back-to-back three pointers by Bianca Atkinson giving the Marlins their first lead of the game, 62-61. Ferrum knotted the score on a free throw but Virginia Wesleyan answered with two made free throws by S'Zahria Jones put the score at 64-62 with eight minutes to play. The Marlins opened up a six-point lead, 71-65, on a jumper by Sabrina Jones (6:15) but a three-pointer by Jacy Marvin closed the gap to three, 71-68, with 5:24 left to play. Back-to-back three pointers by the Marlins opened up a nine-point lead, 77-68, for VWU but Ferrum responded with pulled back within three, 77-74 (2:11), following six consecutive points by the Panthers. FC knotted the score a minute and a half later at 79 all with 43 seconds remaining. After a missed layup by Ferrum, Bianca Atkinson got the rebound and VWU called a timeout to advance the ball and strategize their plan. Jennings inbounded the ball to Sabrina Jones who scored as time ran out to win the game for the Marlins 81-79. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Sabrina Jones with 17 points and 10 rebounds along with the game-winning basket. S'Zahria Jones added 15 points, while Jessica Jennings tallied 13 points. Celeste Rucker came up one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds and Bianca Atkinson was the last Marlin in double-digits with 10 points on the day.

FERRUM LEADERS
The Panthers were led by Kayla Cabiness with 18 points. She was followed by Arin Bunker who added 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Cameron Hawkins put up 13 points and Jacy Marvin contributed 11.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the final four seconds when the Marlins inbounded the ball to Sabrina Jones who scored on a layup to edge the Marlins past the Panthers. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan Marlins await the ODAC's announcement on Monday for the championship tournament and who they will face in the first round.
