VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - Cameia Alexander has been named Director of Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track & Field at Virginia Wesleyan University, according to
Andrea Hoover-Erbig, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. She has served as the Assistant Director for the past year.
In this capacity, she will oversee men's and women's programs in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field.
"I am pleased to announce Cameia's promotion and have every confidence that she will lead the program to new levels of success in our conference and nationally," Hoover-Erbig said. "During her time with us she has demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities as a recruiter, motivator, and role model for our student-athletes."
"Thank you to Dr. (Scott) Miller (VWU President) and
Andrea Hoover-Erbig for this opportunity to lead this outstanding group of student-athletes," Alexander said. "I'm honored to lead our men's and women's cross country and track and field programs at this exciting point in VWU's history. With our outstanding location, the academic profile of the University, and the recent addition of new facilities, I am confident that we can build on the University's recent successes."
Alexander added, "We have a talented group of athletes this season and they have worked extremely hard during fall training. I am excited to see what both the indoor and outdoor seasons will bring!"
The Betty S. Rogers Track and Field Center was added to athletic complex at Virginia Wesleyan University in 2018. The program also benefits from the proximity to the new indoor track and field facility constructed by the City of Virginia Beach.
In her first year with the Marlins, Alexander helped guide two Marlins to the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championship Meet, including
Geni Roberts, who earned All-American status, and
Jaylyn Lane who finished 11th. The 2021 outdoor season concluded with Alexander helping seven Marlins break school records and six earning podium finishes at the ODAC Outdoor Championship Meet.
Alexander holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Health & Human Services from Troy University and a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health from Troy University. She previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Troy University where she worked primarily with the sprints and hurdles for the Trojans. While at Troy, Alexander recruited men's and women's jumpers, sprinters, and hurdlers, while also working closely with the head cross country/assistant distance coach on proper techniques and postures for distance runners. She was a member of a coaching staff that saw 39 school records broken and produced 38 All-Sunbelt Honors in her four years at Troy. She also helped the Trojans with a Sunbelt Runner's up finish in the 2020 Indoor Season.
Alexander also led the teams' Community Service and Team Fundraisers for the Trojans, while also serving as the teams' study hall monitor.
