INSIDE THE SCORE
The teams traded baskets to begin the first quarter as Regent held a slim 6-5 lead at the five minute mark. VWU tied the game at six all and took a 10-6 lead after a 5-0 run. The Royals came back to knot the score at 10 and reclaimed the lead as RU headed into the second quarter with a 13-11 advantage.
The Marlins went on a 10-0 run taking a 21-13 lead by the 7:28 mark in the second quarter. A three pointer by
Nat Collier gave VWU a nine point lead 24-15 with 6:04 in the half. Regent pulled within five, 26-21 (3:36), but Virginia Wesleyan managed to reclaim its nine point lead, 32-23, heading into the halftime break after a jumper by
Celeste Rucker.
VWU scored six points out the gate taking a 15 point lead, 38-23, but RU did not back down chipping away at the Marlins lead to pull within four points, 39-35, following a 12-1 rally that spanned five minutes. Virginia Wesleyan headed into the final period with only a five point lead, 41-36.
The Marlins opened the fourth quarter scoring seven consecutive points taking a 12 point lead, 48-36, as the clock ticked under eight to play. Regent came as close as nine points the remainder of the contest as Virginia Wesleyan held off the Royals claiming a 61-52 victory snapping a four game losing streak.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by
Adaje Williams with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
Celeste Rucker and
Jessica Jennings each added nine points, while Rucker and
Olivia Winslow joined Williams in double-digit rebounds with 11 and 10 respectively.
REGENT LEADERS
The Royals were led by Kali Murrell with 31 points. Three Royals tallied 10 or more rebounds led by Brooke Glisson with 14, Kylie McLendon (11), and Desiree Cross (10).
