After both teams got off to a slow start in the first quarter with MACU leading 12-7 after the first 10 minutes, the Marlins scored 14 points in the second quarter to trail by two, 23-21 at the halftime break.
VWU reclaimed a slim lead 24-23 following a
Jessica Jennings three pointer but the Mustangs went on a 13-4 run taking a 10-point lead, 36-26 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Virginia Wesleyan added a trio of points in the final three minutes to head into the final quarter trailing 36-29.
The Marlins pulled within three points, 36-33, after capping their 7-0 run with an
Olivia Winslow jumper. The Mustangs pulled ahead by 11 points, 45-34, as the clock ticked just under six minutes to play. VWU got as close as seven points in the final minutes but the ball would not fall in the Marlins favor as they fell to the Mustangs 56-47.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by
Adaje Williams with 14 points while
Jessica Jennings added 13 and
S'Zahria Jones contributed 12. Williams and Jennings both tallied nine rebounds while Jones added six of her own.
MID-ATLANTIC CHRISTIAN LEADERS
The Mustangs were led by Tyeisha Williams with 21 points ad nine rebounds. Judea Edmonds added 13 points and Kayla Kent rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points. Airyannah Moitt led both teams with 10 rebounds.
