Virginia Wesleyan defeats Meredith College in overtime to go 2-0 on the weekend

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team defeated the Avenging Angels of Meredith College in overtime on Sunday afternoon at TowneBank Arena in Virginia Beach, VA. Four Marlins scored in double-digits to go 2-0 on the weekend.

INSIDE THE SCORE
The Marlins took the early lead getting on the board first off a pair of free throws from Jessica Jennings and were soon up 6-2. Meredith came back to tie the game at 11 all and took their first lead of the game off a three pointer with 86 seconds remaining in the first quarter that put the score at 14-11. The Angels held a six-point lead, 18-12 heading into the second ten minute period. 

The Marlins cut the lead to three, 22-19, after Imani Felton hit a three pointer with 6:29 on the clock in the second quarter. As the teams headed into the halftime break, Virginia Wesleyan trailed Meredith by seven,  32-25.

The Avenging Angels lead grew to 11 points 70 seconds into the third quarter but the Marlins chipped it down to five points, 36-31 two minutes later as S'Zahria Jones converted a pair of free throws. Meredith again extended its lead back to ten points, 43-33, but Virginia Wesleyan whittle it down to one, 43-42, and took the lead at the buzzer on a jumper by Celeste Rucker to head into the fourth quarter up by one, 44-43. 

Three minutes passed before either team scored in the fourth quarter as Meredith connected on a free throw to knot the score at 44 all. The Marlins took a four-point lead, 50-46, following two free throws from Jennings but the Avenging Angels clawed back to take a 55-52 lead after a 9-5 run. The Marlins tied the score at 55 all with 30 seconds remaining forcing an overtime period.

Virginia Wesleyan carried the momentum from the game-tying three into the overtime period as they got out to a four-point lead, 59-55, with 3:30 remaining in the period. The Avenging Angels pulled within one point trailing 59-58 with 33 seconds left on the clock. The Marlins went ahead by four point, 62-58 after three free throws fell in VWU's favor. Meredith put two more points on the board with six seconds to play but the Marlins put the final point on the board off a Bianca Atkinson free throw to hold off Meredith for the win 63-60. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Jessica Jennings with 17 points and seven assists while Adaje Williams and S'Zahria Jones both collected 14 points. Williams tallied a team-high 14 rebounds. Imani Felton joined Jennings, Williams, and Jones in double figures with 11 points. 

MEREDITH LEADERS
The Avenging Angels were led by Kate Perko with 26 points and 18 rebounds. 

UP NEXT
The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team will break for the Thanksgiving holiday and return to TowneBank Arena on Monday, November 29. The Marlins will host the Mustangs of Mid-Atlantic Christian University at 6 PM in Virginia Beach, VA.
