FOREST, Virginia - The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced the 2021 Women's Soccer All-Conference teams and Of The Year honors on Thursday afternoon. Virginia Wesleyan University women's soccer claimed the top three honors in Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Coach of the Year as well as boasting seven All-Conference honorees.
Breacain McClenahan made her mark this season on the ODAC as she was selected as the Rookie of the Year by the league coaches and earned first team honors. The freshman appeared in 18 matches making 16 starts at forward for the Marlins. The Lumberton, New Jersey native leads the team with six goals, including two game-winners, and a pair of assists for 14 points on the season. McClenahan attempted 30 shots with 19 coming on goal.
Junior defender
Sam Crawford collected Player of the Year honors after helping the Marlins to their second program conference championship and first since 2006. The Bensalem, Pennsylvania native started in all 18 matches that she appeared on defense for the Marlins. Crawford assisted in helping Virginia Wesleyan post 12 shutouts this season en route to a 12-5-2 overall mark. She also earned the ODAC Championship All-Tournament Most Outstanding Player for her efforts in the Marlins defensive backfield. Crawford makes her third appearance on the ODAC All-Conference teams, and second consecutive first-team nod.
Rounding out the 'Of the Year' awards is Head Coach
Jeff Bowers. In his 22nd season at the helm, Bowers led his team to the ODAC Championship title after earning the regular season champion title as well. Coach Bowers earned his 300th career coaching victory with the 1-0 win at Lynchburg on October 13.
Joining McClenahan and Crawford on the ODAC All-Conference first-team is senior midfielder
Kennedi Anders. Anders makes her fourth appearance on the ODAC All-Conference teams, and second consecutive first-team nod. The season is the only Marlins to start in all 19 matches of the season. The Allen, Texas native has one goal on the season, collected against Randolph-Macon, and one assist on 18 shot attempts, nine of which came on goal.
Four other Marlins earned All-Conference honors in
Kaitlyn Duswalt,
Rachel Quigley,
Carleigh Van Reenen, and
Camryn Terry. Duswalt and Quigley earn garnered second-team honors, while Van Reenen and Terry both collected third-team accolades.
Duswalt made 15 starts in 16 appearances on defense for Virginia Wesleyan. The first year accumulated nearly 1300 minutes of playing time while recording two shots, one one goal, during the season.
Quigley has appeared in 10 matches making nine starts in the net for VWU. The sophomore has played nearly 780 minutes between the pipes allowing just three goals for a 0.35 goals against average while making 21 saves for an 87.5 save percentage. Quigley collected a 5-2-1 record in goal and has contributed to eight of the 12 VWU shut outs this season.
Van Reenen has started each of the nine matches she has appeared in for VWU. The senior forward attempted 20 shots with nine coming on target. The All-Conference nod is the first of Van Reenen's career.
Rounding out the Virginia Wesleyan representatives is senior midfielder
Camryn Terry. Terry, a captain for VWU, started and played in 17 of the season's 19 matches. She tallied one assist while attempting 33 shots with 12 on frame. Terry is making her second appearance on the ODAC All-Conference teams earning third-team accolades back in 2019.
Virginia Wesleyan returns to the pitch on Saturday, November 13, in the opening round of the NCAA Women's Soccer National Championship Tournament. The Marlins will compete on the campus of The College of New Jersey and drew No. 11 Messiah as their first opponent. First kick between the Falcons and Marlins is set for 1:30 PM in Ewing, NJ.
