Marlins fall to the Maroons of Roanoke 74-37

SALEM, Virginia - The VWU women's basketball fell to the Maroons of Roanoke College 74-37 on Saturday afternoon in ODAC competition in Roanoke, Va. The Marlins move to 5-17 overall and 3-12 in ODAC competition, while the Maroons are now 14-7 and 9-5. 

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Maroons scoring five points before the Marlins found their first point from Mak McSweeney on a free throw. Roanoke put up another five points to take a 10-1 lead until McSweeney converted a pair of free throws to trail by seven with four to play in the opening quarter. RC closed out the quarter on an 11-3 run to lead 21-6 at the end of the first. 

A 10-0 run by the Maroons began the second quarter and saw the Marlins trailing by 25 points at the six-minute mark. A jumper by Sierra Coleman ended the VWU drought and spurred a 12-10 run to close out the half with Roanoke leading 41-18 at the break.

A three-pointer by Logan Carter ended the 7-0 run Roanoke was on that started the third quarter. Carter's basket put the score at 48-21 with seven minutes in the third to go. The Maroons closed out the third on a 9-3 run heading into the fourth with a 57-24 lead.

Virginia Wesleyan scored the most points of all four quarters in the fourth frame in 13, but Roanoke's lead was too great for the Marlins to overcome as the final score sat at 74-37.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Mak McSweeney with 12 points and eight rebounds. Logan Carter and Sierra Coleman each added nine points and Sabrina Jones put up six. Elizabeth Vincent brought down seven boards as well.

ROANOKE LEADERS
The Maroons were led by Ayanna Scarborough with 16 points and eight rebounds. Whitney Hopson was the only other Maroon in double-digits with 13 points. Scarborough led the team with four assists while Hopson tallied five steals.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came right out of the gate as the Maroons outscored the Marlins 21-6 in the first ten minutes.

UP NEXT
VWU continues their road trip by heading to Lynchburg, Va., to face the Hornets of the University of Lynchburg. The Marlins meet the Hornets at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, in Turner Gymnasium in an ODAC match-up in Lynchburg.
