Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia - The VWU women's basketball fell to the Quakers of Guilford College 58-42 on Wednesday afternoon in ODAC competition at the Jane P. Batten Student Center in Virginia Beach, Va. The Marlins move to 5-16 overall and 3-11 in ODAC competition, while the Quakers are now 11-8 and 7-7.
INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Quakers finding their first points on a pair of free throws from Carisma Lynn 14 seconds into the game. Guilford scored five more points before Jessica Jennings hit a three to put the Marlins on the board at the 6:53 mark. A 5-0 run put the Quakers up 12-3 before Mak McSweeney hit a pair threes pulling VWu within five points, 14-9, with under three to play in the opening quarter. The Quakers took an 11-point lead that they held heading into the second quarter with the score at 22-11.
Guilford outscored the Marlins in the second quarter going on a 16-6 run throughout the ten-minute period to lead 38-17 at the halftime horn. Sierra Coleman scored four of the six points on a pair of free throws and a layup, while McSweeney contributed the other two points.
A 15-10 run by Virginia Wesleyan in the third quarter cut the Quaker lead to 16-points as the teams heading into the fourth with the score sitting at 48-32. Isis Moore scored eight of her 12 points in the third while also grabbing two rebounds and a steal. McSweeney contributed a three while Jennings and Coleman each added a basket.
Virginia Wesleyan fought and climbed their way back within 12-points of the Quakers after starting the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run to trail 52-40 by the seven-minute mark. Guilford took control from there closing out the game on a 6-2 run winning 58-42.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Mak McSweeney and Isis Moore with 13 and 12 points respectively. Sierra Coleman collected a team-high eight rebounds and Jessica Jennings tallied three steals.
GUILFORD LEADERS
The Quakers were led by Julie Carini who had 12 points while teammates Lindsay Gauldin, Miracle Walters, and Kristen Roberts each put up 11 points apiece. Gauldin recorded a double-double with 15 rebounds to go along with her 11 points. Walters led in assists (6) and steals (5).
KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the final seven minutes when the ball went cold for the Marlins who were as close as 12-points to the Quakers who won 58-42.
