Marlins Fall To Hornets Of Lynchburg In Midweek ODAC Matchup

LYNCHBURG, Virginia - The VWU women's basketball fell to the Hornets from the University of Lynchburg 75-38 on Tuesday evening in ODAC competition in Lynchburg, Va. The Marlins move to 5-18 overall and 3-13 in ODAC competition, while the Hornets are now 10-12 and 7-8. 

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with the Hornets going on a 13-0 lead in the opening four minutes of the game before a basket by Sabrina Jones halted the Lynchburg rally. Lynchburg closed out the first quarter on a 13-7 run leading 26-9 at the end of the opening frame.

The Hornets outscored the Marlins in the second quarter 16 to 8 to lead 42-17 at the horn. Four of VWU's eight points came in the final 70 seconds of the half on baskets from Lindsey Hicks and Jovante White.

The third quarter started similar to the first with the Hornets taking a10-0 run right out of the gates to lead 52-17 with just under seven to play in the third. Bianca Atkinson hit a three-pointer followed by a layup from Hicks ended the scoreless drought for the Marlins and out the score at 52-22 with six to play. The remainder of the third the teams traded baskets with the Hornets leading a 10-6 run into the fourth frame with the score sitting at 62-28.

VWU scored 10 points in the fourth on two free throws and four baskets. The Hornets tallied 13 points in the third and put the final score at 75-38

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Sabrina Jones with 11 points. Lindsey Hicks and Elizabeth Vincent both led the team with seven rebounds while Hicks was the second-highest scorer with eight points.

LYNCHBURG LEADERS
The Hornets were led by Maggie Quarles with a game-high 15 points. Lexi Hall was close behind with 14 points and Abby Oguich tallied 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came right out of the gate with the Hornets opening on a 13-0 run. 

UP NEXT
VWU returns to the friendly confines of the Jane P. Batten Student Center for a matchup against Washington & Lee on February 16. The Generals face the Marlins at 2 p.m. for a Sunday afternoon matinee.
