Virginia Wesleyan Falls On The Road At Hollins 62-50

ROANOKE, Virginia - The VWU women's basketball team fell to Hollins University 62-50 on Saturday afternoon in ODAC competition in Roanoke, Va. The Marlins move to 5-15 overall and 3-10 in ODAC competition, while Hollins is now 10-9 and 5-8. 

INSIDE THE SCORE
The game began with Hollins getting on the board first with a pair of free throws by Kayla Surles. Isis Moore tied the score with a jumper but the Green reclaimed the lead with a three from Serena Lytton at 8:15. VWU tied the score again at five all however Hollins went on a 9-4 run to take a 14-8 lead with 3:41 remaining in the first. At the end of the opening ten minutes, the Marlins trailed Hollins 16-12.

Virginia Wesleyan stayed with Hollins in the second quarter tying and even taking their first lead, 23-21, of the game on a jumper by Logan Carter at the 5:35 mark. The teams knotted the score a few times before Hollins went on a 5-2 run to take a 33-30 lead into halftime.

Mak McSweeney gave the Marlins the first basket of the second half on a free throw at 9:49 to climb within two points, 33-31. A minute later, Hollins' Lenah Clements made a three-pointer to go ahead by five, 36-31, a score that held until the 5:30 mark when the Green hit a jumper pulling ahead a little more. A 7-2 run by VWU put the Malins down by two, 40-38, with 2:39 remaining in the third. In the final minutes of the third, the Marlins led a 6-5 run to trail by one 45-44 heading into the final frame. 

Hollins scored the first 11 points of the fourth taking a 12-point lead, 56-44, by the 3:45 mark. Danielle Lehner hit a jumper to pull within 10 points, but the Green closed out the game on a 6-4 run to win by 12-points, 62-50.

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
The Marlins were led by Isis Moore with 13 points with Mak McSweeney close behind with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. 

HOLLINS LEADERS
Hollins was led by Kayla Surles with 18 points while Lenah Clements and Yasmine Tyler each added 11 apiece. Keyazia Taylor had a game-high 12 rebounds along with her pair of blocks and steals.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the opening seven minutes of the fourth quarter when Hollins went on an 11-0 run taking a 12-point lead over VWU.

Virginia Wesleyan returns home to the Jane P. Batten Student Center on Wednesday, February 5, when they host the Quakers of Guilford College. Tipoff between VWU and GC is set for 5 p.m. in Virginia Beach, Va.
