Marlins fall on the road to Generals of Washington and Lee

LEXINGTON, Virginia - The Virginia Wesleyan University women's basketball team fell to the Generals of Washington & Lee University 91-46 on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va. The Marlins move to 3-11 overall and 2-6 against ODAC competition while the Generals improve to 9-6 and 6-2.

INSIDE THE SCORE
W&L got on the scoreboard first on a three-pointer from Megan Horn nine seconds into the game. Sierra Coleman got the Marlins on the board after making a jump shot at 9:25. VWU stayed within a point of W&L for the next few minutes (8-7 - 7:57) but the Generals went on a 9-0 run that put them ahead 10 points, 17-7 with 5:40 remaining in the opening quarter. The Marlins responded with an 8-2 run of their own over a three-minute span (19-15), but the Generals closed out the first quarter with an 8-2 run putting them ahead by 10 points, 27-17, heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was the Generals quarter as they outscored the Marlins 18-7 taking a 45-24 lead into the halftime break. Jessica Jennings had three points on a free throw and jumper, Sabrina Jones made a pair of free throws and Elizabeth Vincent made a jump shot for the Marlins seven points.

Coming out of the break the Marlins scored six quick points, however, the Generals responded to each basket with one of their own as the score sat 52-30 following a jumper by Logan Carter with 8:18 to play in the third. Two minutes later Jennings converted an and-one opportunity to bring the gap under 20-points 52-35. Jones added a layup pulling with 17 but a three from W&L's Lynn Johnson put the gap back up to 20 points with the score at 55-35. Washington and Lee closed out the third quarter on an 11-2 run opening up nearly a 30-point advantage.

In the final quarter, the Marlins only managed to score nine points with their last basket coming off a three-pointer from Carter at the 4:40 mark as the Generals went on to win 91-46. 

VIRGINIA WESLEYAN LEADERS
Virginia Wesleyan was led by Jessica Jennings with 16 points as she shot 6-15 from the field. Sabrina Jones was the only other Marlin to score in double-digits with 12 points in the contest. Jones and Danielle Lehner tied for the team lead with five rebounds apiece.

WASHINGTON & LEE LEADERS
The Generals had three players with double-digit performances led by Erin Hughes with 20 points. Molly Mann and Taylor Casey joined Hughes with 13 and 12 points respectively. Kathryn Vandiver led the Generals with eight rebounds while Hughes tallied seven and three others recorded six.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment of the game came in the second quarter when the Generals outscored VWU 18-7.

UP NEXT
Virginia Wesleyan returns to the friendly confines of the Jane P. Batten Student Center for a midweek match-up against the Mustangs of Mid-Atlantic Christian University. The Mustangs and Marlins meet at 7 PM for tipoff in Virginia Beach, Va.
