Field Hockey Edged at Home by St. Mary's

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team dropped a close match with St. Mary's College, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field. With the result, the Marlins move to 2-5 on the season while the Seahawks remain undefeated (7-0).

After a scoreless opening period, the Marlins were the first to strike. A St. Mary's turnover at midfield allowed Virginia Wesleyan to move the ball into their offensive third. A scramble in the box found Cori Jackson with the ball on her backhand in front of the keeper. The senior sent the ball between the Seahawk netminder's legs, putting the Marlins up five minutes into the second quarter. St. Mary's would tie it though and the score would be 1-1 going into halftime.

In the third, the Seahawks added two more (including one on a penalty stroke) taking a two-goal lead. With time winding down, Elizabeth Roberto narrowed it to just one. The Marlins would be awarded a corner with just 14 ticks left in the third. Hunter Majewski took it, passing it to Julie Fassl. Fassl sent the ball towards net and a scrum ensued. Roberto came up with the ball and took a lifted shot to beat the keeper right under her glove hand. The comeback would fall short though as St. mary's was able to tack on another before the game's end.

Maura Bridges manned the net for the duration of the game, stopping five SeaHawk shots.

Field hockey returns to action again at 7 p.m. on Friday as the team hosts the University of Mary Washington under the lights of Birdsong.
